History

The Association of Institutes of Serbia was founded on 13 April 1990, as the successor of the Permanent Conference of Scientific and Research Organizations. The legal basis for the establishment of the Association was contained in Article 4 of the Law on Scientific and Research Activities (Official Gazette of the Socialist Republic of Serbia, No. 12/90). At that time, 122 authorized representatives of institutes and research and development units signed the Agreement on the Establishment of the Association.

At the founding session, Prof. Dr Tomislav Popović, Director of the Institute of Economic Sciences, was elected as the first President of the Assembly of the Association and served two terms. At that time, the Association actively participated in the drafting of the Law on Scientific and Research Activities, provided expert consultations to its members, and regularly published the Bulletin, which dealt with the analysis of the financial results of institutes and the allocation of funds. The role and significance of the Association were particularly pronounced during the period of the Republic of Serbia Science Fund, when the Association actively cooperated with the Fund’s Council.

From the end of 1999 until 2001, the Association was headed by Vice-President Dr Miodrag Stojić from the Vinča Institute of Nuclear Sciences.

Following the election of Dr Zoran Petrović as President, from 2002 onwards the Association became increasingly active in pursuing its statutory and legal objectives and established increasingly close cooperation with the ministry responsible for science.

Vice-President Dr Bojan Radak from the Vinča Institute of Nuclear Sciences chaired the Association from mid-2015 until early 2016, when Dr Duško Blagojević from the Institute for Biological Research “Siniša Stanković” was elected President.

Today, the work of the Association is primarily regulated by Article 28 of the Law on Science and Research, pursuant to which the Association plays a prominent role in regulating the scientific environment in Serbia.
